Liverpool vs Man City
Premier League 4:30pm Sunday 10th November Anfield
Liverpool and Man City know that the match on Sunday could be determined by fine margins and the results could be decisive, as in 2018/19
Having won 18 out of 22 games between them this season, both Liverpool and Manchester City demonstrated their determination last weekend not to lose any ground as both came from behind to win. After 69 minutes against Southampton, second-placed Man City were 1-0 down but triumphed 2-1. And Liverpool left to finish their own stunning turnaround at Aston Villa even later, trailing after 86 minutes but eventually taking all three points as well. These fine margins, like last season, can prove critical at the end of the campaign. However, when the top two teams met in January, one of the closest-ever Premier League title races came down to just a matter of centimeters.
History favours Liverpool as leaders face champions :
Last season when they were the champions, City bucked the trend, beating Liverpool leaders 2-1 at Etihad Stadium a vital outcome for them to retain their title. And this Sunday’s a similar scenario. Yet the Reds are going to be confident, particularly at Anfield, that the result will be different. Liverpool won more games of the Premier League against the defending champions than any other side, with 21 victories, and last lost in December 2007 to a title holder at home. They also have a strong record at Anfield against Man City, losing only one of their
Fabinho’s comment on City clash:
‘We see it as an opportunity’
Due to the quality of both teams on display, Fabinho considers Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday as’ unique,’ while also providing the opportunity to take points off a direct rival.
The Brazilian midfielder insists the Reds will give everything in the hope of opening up a nine-point gap over City, but appreciates the difficulty of the test that lies in their way.
Defender Joel Matip from Liverpool has not recovered from a knee injury and will miss Manchester City’s visit.
According to coach Jurgen Klopp, Virgil van Dijk, who was “for other reasons” away from training on Thursday, is completely fit and Captain Jordan Henderson has recovered from illness. Xherdan Shaqiri is sidelined by a dispute with the calf.
Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from Manchester City will make his first start in the Premier League in 18 months since Ederson has been ruled out.
In the midweek draw at Atalanta, a thigh injury forced the number one off at half-time and he failed a fitness test ahead of the trip to Anfield. David Silva appears unlikely to play due to his own muscular injury, and Rodri (hamstring) is also in question. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane remain sidelined.
Head to Head stats
Liverpool has lost just one of their last 28 top-flight home games to Man City (1-2 in May 2003) and is undefeated at Anfield in the Premier League (W11 D5) in their last 16 to them.
Man City lost just one of their last five against the Reds in the competition (W2 D2) after losing four Premier League games in a row to Liverpool from 2015-2016.
In their last 16 Premier League games against Liverpool, Man City are winless, their longest such winless streak against an opponent in the history of the competition.
Liverpool won more games against reigning champions in the Premier League than any other team in the history of the competition (21). In fact, since December 2007, they have not lost in such a match at home (0-1 vs. Man Utd), winning six and drawing five since.
Kick back and enjoy the ride-it could be a 5-4 or a 1-0 run, but I’m sitting on the fence for this one.
